Absolutely loving the podcast! Really pleased that I'm not alone in favouring my bright reds and pinks near my face for a lift in mood & glow.
Just a quick question: I'm absolutely NUTS about Norwegian Jerseys - How does that fit in with the Norwegian stereotypical dressing of wearing neutral, subdued, non flashy colours?
It fits just fine, Lesley. There are many Nordic style types. The stereotypical Nordic neutral, subdued, non flashy colours is definitely present. And there are many Norwegian jerseys that are super subdued and neutral in the expression. There is a Norwegian jersey for every style type, up to and including bright and cheery! I should make a post about this. What a great topic! PS I'm so glad you like the podcast. There is a new episode coming out on Friday!
I love what Fiona loves! I may make a purchase or 2. And I reserved a couple of your book suggestions. I want to share with you my encounter with a Danish person at my local midwestern IKEA. She has lived here 40 years and is probably at least in her 70s. At the checkout (all self serve now there which I DISLIKE) I asked an employee for help finding something having already looked thru the entire store. She intervened, said she would find it with me, hugged and kissed her GEN-Z coworker as we took off in a rush, difficulty keeping up with her as she narrated her immigration and her love for her job, her coworkers, found the object, and began helping the other shoppers we encountered on that journey!
This is such a lovely story, Janice - thank you for sharing it! One of the fascinating facts I have picked up while reading The Year of Living Danishly is that the Danes actually have a word for happiness at work (well, they just would, wouldn't they?), namely 'arbejdsglæde' , from 'arbejde' the Danish for 'work' and 'glæde' from the word for 'happiness'. Even more telling is that this term exists exclusively in the Nordic languages.
Thinking about this encounter in your local IKEA, I can't help repeating that unforgettable line from the film When Harry met Sally: "I'll have what she's having, please!"
Such an interesting fact! We have the same word in Norwegian as well: arbeidsglede (literally work joy). Never thought of it being unique to the Nordic countries. I am getting more and more eager to dive into the Year of Living Danishly book. After I finish Dune.
Oh Janice what a perfectly lovely story. What a sweet lady. I must confess that I have downloaded The Year Of Living Danishly to my Kindle after listening to Fiona talk about it, and really look forward to reading it.
